About Archery |
|
Few things are as captivating as the graceful arc of an arrow in flight as it speeds toward its target. Archeological evidence shows that the bow and arrow have been part of human life for more than 5,000 years. The bow and arrow initially developed as tools for early man who used them for hunting food and in warfare. The great Mongol conquest of Asia was accomplished through the great horsemanship ability of these people and their mastery of the short horse-bow. The English longbow and its use during the French - English wars contributed to significant victories for the British. Up until the time of gunpowder, the bow was a significant weapon and tool. Archery remains today in some primitive and indigenous cultures as well as a sporting endeavor. Archery in our culture today is a sport or pastime split into bow hunting and target shooting. The compound bow and the traditional bow are the primary types of bow configurations used today. A compound bow uses a force multiplying method of cables and eccentric cams to produce high arrow speeds of up to and over 300 feet per second. Traditional bows consist of the recurve or longbow, these bows have a handle and long limbs that use stored energy from a drawn bowstring to propel the arrow. The Wild Bunch archery club is organized under the chartering provisions of the National Archery Association (NAA and also known as USA Archery). USA Archery is the United States Olympic Committee sanctioned organization that trains and sponsors athletes to compete in national and international archery events. Under the guidance of USA Archery, Junior and Senior Olympic Archery Development clubs exist nationwide. Target archery is the main focus of the Wild Bunch Team, but learning sportsmanship, respect and building personal confidence are also fostered as a part of our archery program. We have members in our JOAD club from the ages of 6 through 18. Our coaches and program can accommodate a youth archer of any skill level. One of our archers competed on the Junior World Team in 2007! If you feel a little bit “wild” be sure to check us out! |
